1. Feed the baby right before the session. This way, they are nice and full from the start and will more than likely fall asleep easier. Hungry babies are fussy babies!
2. Professional hair and makeup: I know this one will be the last thing on your mind as a new mom, especially as sleep deprived as you may be (while healing from childbirth on top of it all!) but if you plan on being in the photos, give yourself a little pampering so you feel as beautiful as you look during the session!
3. Let your photographer know the nursery or house color theme if you plan on ordering canvas prints. If you like to keep everything neutral, then the photographer will need to know not to go overboard with bright colors. If you have your nursery in pink and grays, a newborn canvas with those complementing colors would look great!
4. Wear something that makes you comfortable; plan ahead of time. Chances are, if you are having a studio newborn session, it will be pretty warm in the studio! Keep this in mind as well. A great option is to do a loose fitting tank with a cardigan over it (if its winter). I suggest families stay in the neutral color range, preferably white and creams.
5. Relax. Is your baby being fussy? It’s completely normal and the photographer is used to it. Have a baby that refuses to sleep for the session? That’s completely fine! Your newborn photographer can wrap the baby to keep them content, and those awake shots are sometimes parent’s favorite anyways!
6. PLAN AHEAD. Newborn photographers book up fast, so a few months before delivery schedule your session. The best time is 15 days or younger, so plan accordingly.
